Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle is playing Ariel in Disney's 'The Little Mermaid'
In July 2019, Disney surprised fans with an announcement — the company cast Halle Bailey, of the sister duo Chloe x Halle, to play Ariel in their live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
The Little Mermaid is not Bailey's first acting gig. Her and her sister, Chloe, acted in ABC's series, Grown-ish. Halle Bailey starred as Sky Forster in over 20 episodes of the series. The actress also appeared in Beyoncé's music video for "All Night," alongside actress Zendaya.
Aside from acting, Halle Bailey and her sister frequently perform with Beyoncé, even opening for her during the Formation World Tour and the On The Run II Tour. The duo sang "America the Beautiful" at the 2019 Superbowl and earned two Grammy nominations, including "Best New Artist." Recently, a video of Halle Bailey singing "Unforgettable" trended online, earning praise from Disney fans and music fanatics alike.
Who else is in Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' cast?
So far, the only confirmed cast member for this movie is Halle Bailey as the lead role, Ariel. There are, however, other actors in talks to portray other iconic characters from The Little Mermaid. According to Variety, Melissa McCarthy is "in talks" to play Ursula for the live-action The Little Mermaid.
Although an official cast list has not been announced, Twitter users are suggesting their favorite celebrities for each role. People jokingly stated Little Mix's Jesy Nelson should portray Sebastian the crab, following her impression of a Jamaican accent.
For the role of Price Eric, BTS fans suggested member Jimin should be cast, even signing a petition to get him the role. Others suggested singer Shawn Mendes and actor Cole Sprouse for the part. Some said actor Cameron Boyce would have been perfect for the part. Actor Garrett Clayton even nominated himself for the role.
"Congrats to Halle Bailey on the new Little Mermaid movie! You're going to be amazing! (If you need a Prince Eric I volunteer as tribute,)" Clayton tweeted.
When does Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' premiere?
Not much has been revealed about this re-imagined film, including the release date. According to Variety, this live-action adaption of The Little Mermaid includes songs from the 1989 animated film, in addition to new tunes written by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
"Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca. David Magee wrote the script with Jane Goldman writing a previous draft," stated the article. Some speculate that filming and production for The Little Mermaid begin in early 2020.
There is no official release date for the live-action The Little Mermaid.
